2005 Bali Retreat Review

Reflections from a facilitators journal.............

.....dusk is falling quickly. This is an utterly gorgeous place to be sleepless in tonight- if jet lag visits......I'm just glad to be listening to the evening chirpers in the healing green embrace of this land......the beautiful gong just rang three times announcing the morning meal is ready to enjoy......There's a delicious breeze cooling the heat I'm not at all used to yet.....hopefully what looks like a rain shower will take hold and freshen everything up......the rice farmers were in the fields 12 hours ago and are still working. They know what needs tending and work rhythmically completing one necessary task after another, even as the rain lightly falls now......

...a traveler from France told me the story of a coastal village in the Maldives Islands, where a young girl noticed that the tide was moving quickly and far out to sea. She remembered from a geography class that this meant a tsunami was coming and she ran to the villagers to warn them. They got to safety in time and were saved as the whole village was destroyed. Imagine the power of education......

...how beautiful is the twilight garden, the moon lighting up the rice fields, moon beam bathed pathways as the night song embraces the dark.......the shining white reflection on the palm trees outside my window as they reflect the luminous full moons' kiss. With the clearly defined shadows and the slight breeze moving, I feel I'm in an illustrated storybook of enchantments......

a lone Egret flies through the valley, a striking white against the green, and then a dragonfly hovers and skirts nearby. Small birds perched on bobbing branches face the rising sun. Tiny ants marching, marching on the balcony railing- and everywhere else. This loving breeze cool and soft, caressing my cheek, bare arms and the back of my neck. So happy......

By the Unda River- a natural Jacuzzi, a delightful, noisy, lively current and I'm right beside the green banks...... I do believe my unprotected skin is burning, so off I go back to the shade... saw my first firefly last night floating in the garden as the moon peeked between moving clouds......I am in Bali. Sometimes from this balcony perch in my beloved room, except for the contradiction of soft breezes, roosters in the distance crowing, water gurgling, irrigating the gardens, chirpers on leaf and air, if not for the curtains scratching in their grooves as the air moves them about inside, I'd think I was watching a movie......

A steep drive to the temple built high up on the side of the sacred volcano, followed by a misty climb on foot up 500 stairs, a prayer at one alter outside the main temple, a spattering of rain for atmosphere, then a downpour as we entered the compound. Empty of tourists, beautiful and still, even with the wet curtain surrounding us under shelter as we waited to pray again.....

We walked along the irrigation canal, then through the charming farmlands. There were traditional concoctions flying in the wind made to disturb hungry birds, rocks in cans jiggling on a string and people sitting in little platforms periodically calling out 'HEY!' to scare the flying thieves away. It's a full time job on a ripening rice field......

After a last dip in the cooling waters, just before leaving the Unda River, a Balinese farm woman crossing nearby saw me and waved. After I waved back, she blew me a kiss! The sweetest of farewells......
