In the final scene of the film Seeking a Friend For the End of the World, imminent doom is seconds away. Yet for the first time in his life, the unlikely hero is completely present. Completely open to the woman he has fallen in love with.
All he wants to do is BE with her till the end, without even thinking of the end. Because in that moment, they are both alive.
She eventually moves from her fear of what is coming, to being utterly present with him, receiving and celebrating the love born between them. She does not waste another second of her life.
It’s a marvelous illustration of where LIFE really is. Not in your head, not in 10 minutes or next year. Life is now.
In a highly paced world where technology has impacted your expectations and demand for faster, bigger, better, more, a new restlessness can be seen emerging in the heart.
The drama of quick change and entertainment by any means can become addictive, as you well know if any of your loved ones play video games.
The moment has become lost in all the doing. Now is not as satisfying as over there, at a future when. The feeling of ENOUGH doesn’t even cross your mind.
The restlessness that comes from being absent from this moment, this NOW, can become chronic if your contentment is always one task or accomplishment away.
Chronic achieving steals your life. Sounds counterintuitive, yet it’s true. Because nothing is more real or as important as right now. Everything else is fantasy because it isn’t happening yet.
It is happening now. If you’re missing it, here are a few helpful suggestions to counter your boredom, impatience, lack of contentment. Yes, you can feel better right now. Just try these simple experiments and note any changes.
The invitation is to find evidence that NOW IS ENOUGH. For however long you can manage it before you have to DO something that takes your mind away. It’s all good.
