BREAK AWAY FROM BOREDOM

Written by Laila Ghattas 12/13

In the final scene of the film Seeking a Friend For the End of the World, imminent doom is seconds away. Yet for the first time in his life, the unlikely hero is completely present. Completely open to the woman he has fallen in love with.

All he wants to do is BE with her till the end, without even thinking of the end. Because in that moment, they are both alive.

She eventually moves from her fear of what is coming, to being utterly present with him, receiving and celebrating the love born between them. She does not waste another second of her life.

It’s a marvelous illustration of where LIFE really is. Not in your head, not in 10 minutes or next year. Life is now.

In a highly paced world where technology has impacted your expectations and demand for faster, bigger, better, more, a new restlessness can be seen emerging in the heart.

The drama of quick change and entertainment by any means can become addictive, as you well know if any of your loved ones play video games.

The moment has become lost in all the doing. Now is not as satisfying as over there, at a future when. The feeling of ENOUGH doesn’t even cross your mind.

The restlessness that comes from being absent from this moment, this NOW, can become chronic if your contentment is always one task or accomplishment away.

Chronic achieving steals your life. Sounds counterintuitive, yet it’s true. Because nothing is more real or as important as right now. Everything else is fantasy because it isn’t happening yet.

It is happening now. If you’re missing it, here are a few helpful suggestions to counter your boredom, impatience, lack of contentment. Yes, you can feel better right now. Just try these simple experiments and note any changes.

The invitation is to find evidence that NOW IS ENOUGH. For however long you can manage it before you have to DO something that takes your mind away. It’s all good.

BOREDOM BUSTING EXERCISES

Warning: You may find these too subtle and simple to value. Challenge yourself to try first, then decide if there's any change in how you feel.

1. Take off your shoes and walk around your home on each surface. Make conscious contact with all the variety of surfaces indoors and outdoors. The cool of tile, the roughness of concrete, the warmth of hardwood, the tickle of grass, the receptivity of sand, the pleasure of carpet….. Be completely observant of your sensory contact with each surface. So subtle an invitation to the present moment. No drama, no ambition, no intellectual chatter. Just walking around with your eyes in your feet.

2. Now try it with your hands. Trace the lines of your computer, around the opening of your coffee cup. Follow the contours of your other hand, feel the edge of the desk. Notice the water as you wash your hands, the texture of the towel as you dry. Touch the leaves of a plant, notice the weight of a window or door you open. Try touching things with your eyes closed. Breath slowly and deeply as you do these simple things that bring you into presence with your environment. Any time you need a bit of a break from hectic life, get really familiar with your surroundings through your senses.

3. You can also do a body scan, something easy enough at your desk, or in bed before you start your day. With eyes closed start at your head or feet and slowly check into each part of your body, every inch, what do you notice? Tension, warmth, aches, stress, soreness, pain, numbness, peace….how are you really feeling in that amazing vessel of yours? This is a great way to find out what needs attention in your body. Follow that lead!

These are simple ways to engage with your environment without fanfare or agenda. Just be here. You’ll notice your focus becomes crisper, you’ll be more relaxed and less restless.
